Is there an Australian Fashion Industry?

I never really appreciated how much the Australian Fashion Industry contributes to the Australia each year. A $27 billion contribution to our economy, over 500,000 jobs and $7.2 billion in export dollars. (Australian Fashion Council)

So it is going well, and growing, right? Well it isn't as easy as it once was to make garments in Australia. Free trade agreements have meant that it is cheaper to make them offshore than here. In fact alarmingly, less than 3% of garments bought in Australia are made in Australia. (the Guardian, 6/6/23)

Australia is known for its quality garments, which are celebrated world-wide. We need to keep these talented designers and those aspiring to be designers in Australia. 

What can I do to help Australian fashion?

The short answer is simple........shop with them.
